How vSocial Went from 0 to 71 Million Page Views in (about) 120 Days

February 27, 2006

vSocial

Ajax Blog had a chance recently to sit down with the breakout team of vSocial.com.

We wanted to pick the brains of the vSocial founding team and learn about: starting a new social networking site, building a large-scale, high-bandwidth web app, developing with Ajax, building traffic/buzz, life hacks, and more.

The numbers speak for themselves: vSocial has gone from 0 to 71M+ monthly page views, 270K+ unique daily visitors and 45M videos served a month … all in about 120 days!

Brad Webb and Mark Sigal of vSocial were kind enough to sit down with Ajax Blog for the following interview. Enjoy!

Can you describe how the company or concept behind vSocial.com came about?

The core platform behind vSocial was developed over the past three years (with vSocial’s other co-founder, Brent Oesterblad) as part of a general purpose social media platform for uploading and sharing pictures, music, movies and other rich media content items. Looking at the market mid-last year, it was clear that Internet video was about to hit in a big way, and we felt that we had a lot of “secret sauce” to bring to the equation so we opted to focus there. The underlying platform is quite feature rich, and we expect to roll more of it out into the market in the coming months.

(Cont’d…)

Google Pages: Creating Webpages

February 23, 2006

Long time rumoured , Google Pages is unofficially out . Rich in AJAX and clean user interface. Have some time to spare ? You just need a Google account you can enjoy this feature :) .
Google Pages, allows users to create webpages on browser using Ajaxed WYSIWYG editor. The use of limited yet usefull tools in the editor is impressive.

I tried creating a my own page on it to see how it works, you can check it at http://me.sreejith.googlepages.com/ . With ove 40 design selections it sure is a boon for the n00bs. Though i do think that this may lead to a better service like creation of CMS, domain addition etc.

SVG Terminal for Firefox Released

February 23, 2006

SVG Terminal, was released on 21`st. SVG terminal is a Javascript module for Firefox 1.5 that enables apps to deliver rich views on network screens

The SVG Terminal package includes a simple demonstration app, and source licensed under the GPL. The demo app has only been tested on Windows to date, but should compile on Linux & MacOS X with minor changes. The javascript code requires Firefox 1.5. Future releases will provide text wrapping and highlighting, and soon airWRX will show off the real power of the SVG Terminal.

Though it comes in AJAX category the codes are different in few ways: The UI is described entirely in SVG, instead of HTML. Almost no input processing is done by the browser. The browser maintains a connection to the server, rather than performing discrete XML-HTTP transactions.

How to Create an Animated Live Search

February 21, 2006

How to create an animated Live Search“, A interesting tutorial written by Steve Smith. A great result with small changes in any Wordpress template. The script is made using script.aculo.us to create a nice effect on displaying search result.

I’ve been meaning for some time to give a little tutorial on the live search I created for this latest design. There are a few steps involved, and I’ll do my best to explain each as we go. I should also note that I’m not including all the effects that you’ll find in my search. They require some special WordPress template changes that you shouln’t have to make. And I need to keep mine unique, right? Also, I’ll be touching on a few steps that are WordPress specific, but the theory can be applied to any site platform.

Thanks to Mike M :)

JotForm : Online form builder

February 19, 2006

JotForm was released yesterday.Bult on JavaScript libraries Prototype and Script.aculo.us, Jotform is an online WYSIWYG form builder, works on Ajax, Instant Edit and JavaScript. As per Aytekin Tank, It would be the first real completely web based WYSIWYG form builder. I really like the interesting idea behind this. Drag-Drop Form fields and a very neat interface . Drag Drop

Completely Free! JotForm is currently completely free. It will stay this way during BETA period. I must admit I have not decided on a business model yet. The most possible outcome will be a Pro version where users will get more benefits. At this point I am more interested in seeing the interest in this tool, collecting feedback from users and weeding out all the bugs.

Easy Try Out!
You can try it out without creating an account. Hey, if you only want a tool to create form source code for you, just create your form, get its source without even creating an account on the JotForm site. You will not even leave the homepage! It is probably one of the easiest ways to create forms.

Can It Collect Data?
Although implementing the first real web WYSIWYG form editor was a very interesting task by itself, it is not that useful. All form building tools on the web provide data collection and access. So does JotForm. It is really easy to see results on the my forms section and you can even export them as Excel, CVS or some other delimited format. You can also receive notification emails.

AJAX-S - Make slideshows with Ajax

February 12, 2006

I recently stumbled upon Ajax-S, which is a short for AJAX-Slides. AJAX-S uses an XML format for the actual data which is being presented and XSLT to transform it into it’s final presentational form in order to provide strict separation of content and presentation. Now the best part is, it is available for free download and hence will be helpful for the developer minds.

The idea came to me because I wanted a lightweight slideshow based on HTML, CSS and JavaScript, but I also wanted to separate the data of each page from the actual code that presents it. Therefore, I decided to move the data into an XML file and then use AJAX to retrieve it. The name AJAX-S is short for AJAX-Slides (or Asynchronous JavaScript and XML Slides, if you want to).

After the recent release it supports incremental rendering, non-JavaScript users and also offers a printable version and fixed many other bugs. :)

Gmail Chat : Coming Up

February 7, 2006

I Was browsing through my mails and noticed this, Google is starting up Gmail Chat, it might give a tough time for web 2.0 company’s like meebo, upcoming emessenger etc.

Google Chat
Your Google Talk chat history can be automatically saved right here in your Gmail account. Now chat with your friends from directly within Gmail, Pop-out Chats : Give chat session its own window.

Nytimes reports

the search-engine giant, is expected on Tuesday to disclose that it will join its instant-messaging service with its popular Gmail program, the latest indication that the company has set its sights on the broader communications industry.

The new program, called Gmail Chat, will let Gmail users exchange text messages with others without having to log onto a separate chat program, making instant messaging simpler and more integrated with the e-mail program.

From anywhere in Gmail, the user can see who is available to chat. The program will also allow users to store instant-message conversations.

There’s more…

e-Messenger ajaxed with MSN

February 2, 2006

The popular web messenger, e-messenger.net which recently lost its popularity to meebo, has implemented Ajax into MSN/Hotmail. Currently the usual Yahoo! & AOL are not available.
Still Meebo seems to have a bit more cleaner look, UI.

e-Messenger is a web application that enables you to chat with your MSN, AOL and Yahoo buddies without having to install any program or Java applet. All you need is a JavaScript enabled browser and you’re set to go and use e-Messenger, even if you’re behind a firewall.
